Windows Server 2016 Standard Vs Datacenter VmwareI am setting up a new server with WS2008R2 DataCenter with the Hyper-V role. Under the DataCenter use rights, I can create unlimited VMs using DataCenter or Enterprise or Standard editions. The question is this: If my expected use of the VM is within the feature set of Standard edition, is there a difference between installing Standard vs Enterprise vs DataCenter in a VM and using only those features? Put another way, does a DataCenter VM use more resources (disk, processor, memory) than a Standard or Enterprise VM if none of the Enterprise or DataCenter roles or features are added? Is there a benefit to overall resources to install Standard edition or does it matter if they are all DataCenter edition VMs? I found with a lot of DC HyperV hosts that it really doesn't matter what you put on there as the VMs. They will act the same. Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 Standard and Datacenter Windows Server 2016 Standard and Datacenter; Physical (host) memory support: Up to 4 TB per physical server: Up to 24 TB per physical server (6x) Physical (host) logical processor support: Up to 320 LPs: Up to 512 LPs: Virtual machine memory support. There are two editions of Windows Server 2016, DataCenter Edition and Standard Edition. The Datacenter edition caters to high-density hybrid and private cloud environments, providing unlimited OSE containers, a nano server, new storage features, such as Storage Spaces Direct and Storage Replica, which is an Azure-inspired storage enhancement. The only reason I can think of to use the OS version that fits your server role, is if you were to ever need to V2P migration. Then you might want a Standard Edition versus a Datacenter Edition for something small like a Domain Controller. Might be a little difference in sizing of the VHDs, but it can't be but a tiny bit at most. Not that you would probably ever go V2P, but it's something to think about. There is no limit to the number of VM's you create as long as the hardware can support the load. The limit is licensing. Each Standard license allows 2 Windows Server guests on the same physical hardware. Datacenter allows unlimited on the same physical hardware. Since 2016 introduced licensing per core with a minimum of 16 cores per physical server, you would increase your core count as you increase Standard guests - if you have 16 cores, you would license 16 cores for up to 2 VM's, you would license 32 cores to allow 3-4 VM's and so forth. With Datacenter you license all cores and have unlimited guests. There is no limit to the number of VM's you create as long as the hardware can support the load.
